What to Wear for Kids and Family Photos

Outfits and Colors for Everyone to Look Their Best

Do you have family photos coming up this summer or scheduled for the Michigan fall colors?  Here are some tips to have your family looking and feeling their best.

{Individuals}-  More than anything else, I recommend wearing something that you are confident in, something you know you look good in.  I recommend wearing something more bold and colorful with a lot of texture to show off personality.  I love the look of layers, accessories and complimentary colors.   If you’re not sure about layers and accessories, just bring them with you in a bag to your session and I’ll help you decide.   Staying away from specific colors is important too.  Stay away from really bright (muted or in a pattern is fine) Orange, yellow & neon colors.  Make sure that everything you put on is ironed and don’t forget the shoes, wear a nice pair that you love.

{Individual Children} –  This is an opportunity for your child to shine! I recommend bare feet for indoors and boots, shoes or sandals that compliment their outfit for outside. I recommend clothing that has texture, such as knitting, embroidery, dark faded denim, buttons, and ruffles. It’s hard for kidos to look bad so they can get away with a lot.   A cute hat can go a long way on  little boy and a pretty patterned dress with a stylish jacket can add a lot of visual interest.  If you need advice, text me a a few pics with your outfit options and I’ll help you decide.

{Siblings} –  It can be difficult to coordinate colors and not look too matchy. I recommend picking a few colors, but try not to put them in the same exact clothing. The more layers, textures and colors, the better. Pick colors that compliment each other and then go with different shades of that. I recommend bright or deep colors (jewel tones like mustard yellow, deep purple, turquoise, dark pink, etc.) or muted colors like gray with blues and geens.  Stay away from all white or everyone wearing the same exact colors.

{Families} –  Choose a style and a few colors that you love and set that as the base theme. I recommend having the parents dress fashionable, yet simple and focus more of the funky, unique style on the kids. If you have 5 people all dressing with a lot of layers and accessories it can be too much so make sure you don’t overdo it.  Dark jeans that have a grit to them is always a great choice for the parents or especially the husband. If you are going to wear a print, stay away from small prints and not a lot of visual interest (think bold!). Continue to think about texture and color. You may think that certain colors don’t go together, but again think out of the box and have fun!

I do recommend investing in a new outfit for the session since it does make a huge difference in the final product. Search out local or online boutiques for outfits with style that stay true to who you and your family are.  When in doubt, ask the photographer, that’s what they’re there for and don’t forget to enjoy the process.
